THE TRUTH ABOUT MELODY BROWN BY LISA JEWELL

IMG_3295.JPG
I have to say this is a brilliant book and I enjoyed every minute of it and did not want to put it down until I had finished it.
When she was nine years old, Melody Browne’s house burned down, taking every toy, every photograph, every item of clothing and old Christmas card with it. But not only did the fire destroy all her possessions, it took with it all her memories – Melody Browne can remember nothing before her ninth birthday. Now in her early thirties, Melody lives in a council flat in the middle of London with her seventeen-year-old son. She hasn’t seen her parents since she left home at fifteen, but Melody doesn’t mind, she’s better off on her own. She’s made a good life for herself and her son and she likes it that way. Until one night something extraordinary happens. Whilst attending a hypnotist show with her first date in years she faints – and when she comes round she starts to remember. At first her memories mean nothing to her but then slowly, day by day, she begins to piece together the real story of her childhood. Her journey takes her to the seaside town of Broadstairs, to oddly familiar houses in London backstreets and to meetings with strangers who love her like their own. But with every mystery she solves another one materialises, with every question she answers another appears. And Melody begins to wonder if she’ll ever know the truth about her past.
I recommend you read this book, brilliant writing, story and feeling so making it one of my favourite books I have ever read.

GOOGIES – FOLKESTONE, KENT

IMG_3257.JPGAs I walk down through Folkestone high street I always get a buzz when I am at the beginning of the Old high street, you can tell you are there as the shops become smaller, mixed in with art gallery’s, cafés and bars. My favourite coffee bar/wine bar/art cafe is Googies, why? I hear you ask, the first impression is the bright colour and all the table and chairs outside, very often full especially in the summer. As you walk inside you are greeted by the staff behind the counter, who always have a smile and will explain the different coffee, tea and drinks that they provide as they do specialise in many unusual drinks that you just have to try. The manager Steve must be a pleasure to work for as he is always so upbeat and hands on with everything and I mean everything, I saw him helping with the cleaning! Lol. At the moment they are doing some refurbishment by stripping all the old plaster and un covering the old brickwork, which is going to look fantastic.

IMG_3264.PNGThere are many changes ahead for Googies so it’s an exciting time for the team, I can even give you one exclusive that I will be blogging about next month….COCKTAILS! I cannot wait as they are not going to be the same old ones, Googies are going to put their own bit of magic to work. I am looking forward to seeing what they will do with rhubarb vodca! Yes, rhubarb and many other specialist spirits they have sourced all over the world.

IMG_3258.JPG

IMG_3261.JPG Eating in Googies is another experience you need to have as the food is out of this world and a little bit different. As for the cakes and desserts they make, well, I have to learn to say no as I just don’t know when to stop…The Gypsy tart is my favourite.
With a mixture of tables and chairs and art works it really is a cosy place to be for a mid morning coffee or a pleasant glass of wine in the evenings. Because it is so laid back and friendly I love it as I can pop in anytime on my own and not feel out of place, even in the evening for a glass of wine as I could never go in a pub on my on but that’s another story. Lol

IMG_3259.JPG Thursdays are steak night so that is my next visit and will take pics of the amazing food for you all to drool over.
There will be Christmas news about what Steve has planned for Googies and I will share that with you next month. I’m off for a coffee now!

HG WELLS

IMG_3191.JPG
I have been involved in a lot of the workshops and the writing competition this year for the HG Wells Festival. It has been really interesting and I have learnt not only things about him but also about Folkestone as that is where he lived. I was amazed to discover that there used to be another lift at the Sandgate end of the Lees’s and I was told about a short cut down into Sandgate. The house that HG Wells built was amazing for its time and he implemented things that had not been heard of, such as en-suits to all the bedrooms and even a push pedal toilet.

IMG_3192.JPGThere is now a pop up shop in Sandgate high Street dedicated to Wells and it is well worth a visit. He wrote a lot of short stories and that will be the next book I buy as hearing some of the blurb about them they sound very interesting.

IMG_3194.JPG This is definitely somewhere to visit and will be open all winter.

A DAY AT THE PARK WITH JADE, MIA, ZAC & PEPPER DOGGY

I went along to the park with Billie and the children and took my new camera, still very impressed with photos so thought I had better do a post about them. The dog is called Pepper but for some reason Mia calls him Pepper doggy so now we all call him that….and no I do not know why! Lol

IMG_2713.JPG

IMG_2712.JPGPepper would of liked to of said hello to the ducks but they were keeping to the middle of the pond.

IMG_2705.JPGHe did try to catch the feathers but failed at that.

IMG_2708.JPGI love the expressions on Mia’s face as she takes it all in.

IMG_2707.JPG

IMG_2706.JPGWe had to keep Zac’s dummy in or he ate the grass!

IMG_2711.JPG

IMG_2718.JPG

IMG_2719.JPG Then we went to the park where Mia learnt to come down the slide backwards and on her belly, you could hear her clapping herself! Lol

I DREAM A DREAM

20140805-102832 am-37712330.jpg
Sitting here watching the sun set, I think of you, wherever you are,
do you think of me? Wishing to hold me close like yesteryear?
I can feel your touch, soft but strong
I can smell the Joop, you loved so much.
I miss you still as the memories fade but never go
You were my love, I didn’t know, until you left for pastures new.
Did you know I loved you, body and soul?
Did you care or forget as the miles rolled by?
I dream a dream, of holding you again
Making you mine till the end of our days

NEW DESK

First of all I wanted to share with you the certificate I received from Breast Cancer Care thanking us for raising the money. I thought that was a lovely thought.

I wanted a desk in my bedroom as it is so light and airy with the window looking out onto the garden, I just love my bedroom. I started to look about as it needed to be an exact size to fit in the gap and with drawers on the right. I eventually found one on EBay and it was only £7 what a bargain, great condition. So off I went to pick it up as it fitted in the back of the car. As I have been looking for a while I also started to collect little bits that I wanted to go on the desk.

20140803-060556 am-21956148.jpgMy favourite thing is my handbag light, it is so cool, I love it to bits. When I was out with Corinne I found the frame and she put the wadding and material in it to make it a notice board so I have pit all the things that mean something to me on it instead of them being in a cupboard where they are never seen.

20140803-060823 am-22103377.jpgI am now very happy sitting at my desk, looking down the garden and dreaming up the next story to write.
