A MOTHER’S LOVE by ROSIE HARRIS

Set in the war this really made you realise what it was like for different people depending on their jobs and money or lack of it for a lot of them. Men and women adapted to different roles and I can see how the woman’s movements materialised from the war as then a lot of woman had to do the men’s jobs.
Set in Liverpool the story tells of a young girl in love and her boyfriend is sent off to war in France, he is not there long and he is killed. On discovering she is pregnant she leaves home, never to return.
After trying numerous jobs and living in a one room slum she eventually ends up working and living in a hotel. The couple who run the hotel are also expecting a child and when the time comes they have a lovely daughter but Julia loses her baby at birth. Eventually recovering she returns to work and also helps them look after their baby and the two woman share the office work.
Julia plans her wedding to her long standing friend who helps her along the way. Tragedy strikes when over a few years the wife and then the husband die so it is left to Julia to bring up their daughter, with some shocks along the way.
I found it a most enjoyable book to read even if the ending was a bit obvious but at least it was a happy one.
